A food becomes healthy when it has sufficient amount of proteins, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates etc. as needed by our body. Let us see the source of these nutrients and how to make our food healthy!

1: Whole Grains

‘A person should consume at least 3 ounces of whole grains per day.’

Whole Grains are rich in fiber, minerals and vitamins. They are normally present in brown bread, cereals, oatmeal, corn and buckwheat.

2: Fruits & Vegetables

They are rich in vitamin, mineral and fiber content and are extremely essential for our body to work well. It’s recommended that a person should eat minimum five portions of fruits every day. They can be eaten in fresh, frozen or canned, or dried fruits and vegetables. Each portion must contain either one large fruit or three heaped spoons of vegetables. Beans and pulses are also essential for our health and must be eaten daily.

3: Proteins

Proteins are required for building and making up of muscles in our body. Foods that are rich in proteins also include minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc and vitamins. As per health statistics,

‘Proteins should make up 20% of our nutritional intake.’

Person should try having meat, eggs, beans, soya, nuts and fish to get a high-protein diet.

4: Legumes

They are plants belonging to the pea family. Eating Legumes helps in improving glycemic control in people suffering from diabetes type 2. It also reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases. It is available in plenty in peas, peanuts, lupins, lentils, beans etc.

5: Dairy Products

Dairy products are best sources of calcium that is important for healthy bones and teeth. It includes milk, yogurt, cheese etc. Vegetarians can get their calcium intake from vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and soya milk.

In order to eat healthy, we should always try to attain perfect balance between body energy and healthy weight. We should try eating more of fruits and vegetables. We should also have lesser quantity of saturated fats in our diet.
